If you always do the same exercise your body will adapt. You may have initially burned a lot of calories with a given exercise but over time your body adapt to the exercise and figure out a way to burn less calories. The human body is smart that way! They had found that for those losing 20 lbs or more it often worked well to loose 20, then work to maintain that loss for about 6 months--so the body metabolism "center" (in the brain) gets used to maintaining the loss--then work to lose more weight after that.
